We banded at Laughlin Bottoms during another hot morning today. After about 0830, bird activity really dropped off, even more than usual. As a result, we only ended up with 18 for the morning; not a bad total but still slightly less than what we usually catch at this site.

Karen and I banded at Proffitt's Prairie this morning; it was very hot and steamy but there were still plenty of birds around. I also got a lifer this morning- not a bird, reptile, amphibian, mammal, or butterfly, but a spider. We found a real live tarantula today along one of our banding trails! Such a neat creature, it would rear up and try to strike at the toe of my boot at times. It was quite camera shy though, preventing me from getting any usable shots. It would continuously dart around on the gravel and grass and wouldn't stay still for more than a second or two at a time.
